I took these photos while traveling in the Basilicata region of Southern Italy where I discovered the ancient city of Matera.
The entire city is comprised of cave homes dug out of the soft rock of the mountain side.
In the 1950s the Italian government found nearly 15,000 people still inhabiting the cave homes declared them unhealthy and outlawed their use.
With the cities population now moved into more modern housing there's an ongoing effort to rehab the cities cave homes by artistic types who look at them as being trendy.
